The streets of Barcelona are an open-air museum of architecture and plastic arts. On this guided Barcelona tour, you will discover its diversity, from Roman ruins to Gothic marvels and stunning Modernism. This tour offers a complete journey through its main streets, squares, and monuments.

A City of Diverse Architecture

One of the city’s key features is its variety of eras and styles. See the legacy of the Romans, who founded Barcino in the 1st century BC. Explore the perfectly preserved Gothic Quarter, home to the King’s Square and the majestic Cathedral. As your tour guide in Barcelona will explain, the city is also the world capital of Modernism (Art Nouveau), which reached an unprecedented peak here. You will also see ultra-modern buildings constructed for the 1992 Olympics.

To get to know such a city thoroughly and in detail, you need time. This excursion allows you to see Barcelona in its fullest form, its main streets, squares and monuments, admire the city’s architecture, and feel its inexhaustible vital energy. Barcelona is the largest port in the Western Mediterranean, an important center for international congresses and symposiums. The multifaceted flow of city guests and tourists contributes to this special atmosphere of cosmopolitanism and dynamism, so characteristic of Barcelona. All the latest trends in art, fashion, and gastronomy find their place here. And at the same time, this is a city that reverently preserves its centuries-old traditions and history.

Tour Itinerary & Modernist Masterpieces

We will visit old Barcelona, then the Eixample district, where the main masterpieces of modernist architecture are located, among which the buildings of Antonio Gaudi occupy a special place: Casa Batlló and Pedrera. We will also visit Park Güell and the Sagrada Familia – the symbol of Barcelona for millions of people around the world.

We will see Plaza de España, the architectural complex and the “Olympic Ring” on Montjuic, the Columbus monument, the Olympic Port. According to your interests, we can visit various museums in Barcelona: Pablo Picasso, Juan Miro, National Art of Catalonia, the open-air ethnographic museum “Spanish Village”, Barça club at the Nou Camp stadium, the Aquarium, etc.

Lunch Like a Local while in Barcelona

You can pre-order lunch in one of the city’s restaurants, or, as the locals do, try delicious tapas (an assortment of different small dishes) in the many bars. Catalonia knows how to cook deliciously, using traditional Mediterranean recipes and the most modern culinary trends. Catalonia is famous for its excellent wines and champagne, called “cava” here.

Between the end of the 19th century and the start of the 20th century, Modernism style ( Liberty style or Art Nouveau style) transformed the city of Barcelona. This period of industrial revolution and economic recovery in Catalonia saw wealthy families eager to commission custom-designed new homes from famous architects.. With no shortage of money, talent, or skilled craftsmen, the result is a unique cityscape. As your expert Barcelona tour guide, I will show you something you can see only here: all the facades are different; you can’t find any two houses that are alike.

Must-See Modernist Masterpieces in Barcelona

The list of modernist jewels is long, but a few highlights include Saint Paul’s Hospital, the Palau de la Música Catalana, and Casa Lleó i Morera (three wonderful works by architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner). Other essential stops are the Arc de Triomf, Casa Amatller, Els Quatre Gats café, and the Boqueria market.

Saint Paul’s Hospital: A Barcelona Tour Highlight

This masterpiece of Catalan Art Nouveau, built between 1902 and 1930, is a city within a city. It was created by the eminent Catalan architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner, a father of the Modernist style who headed the Barcelona School of Architecture for 20 years.

History of the construction

At the end of the 19th century, Barcelona needed a modern hospital. After several study trips to Europe, Domènech i Montaner designed a project that exceeded the best hospitals of the time. He envisioned a complex of 48 specialized pavilions, including a surgical department, all connected by an underground network for moving equipment, personnel, and patients. The surgical pavilion was in use until the 1960s and was the site of Spain’s first heart transplant.

Healing Through Beauty

The core idea was to heal not only through medicine but also through beauty, light, and color. The complex featured a central avenue planted with trees and 145 square meters of gardens per patient. All buildings are made of red brick and decorated with colorful mosaics and ceramics, which were both beautiful and met strict hygiene standards. The administration building’s facade resembles a monumental altarpiece, adorned with sculptures by the best Catalan masters of the time.

A Story of Charity

The hospital was made possible by benefactors. The Catalan banker and philanthropist Pau Gil bequeathed half his fortune for its construction. The mosaics in the administration pavilion represent the coats of arms of Barcelona and Paris, as well as Gil’s bank emblem, alongside the inscription: “Happiness in honesty.” Later, donations from wealthy local families allowed construction to be completed. Upon its 1930 inauguration, King Alfonso XIII of Spain declared, “You Catalans are like that… you build palace-hospitals for the poor.”

Saint Paul’s Today: A UNESCO World Heritage Site

In 1997, the hospital complex was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The restored pavilions now house research labs, host conferences, and welcome visitors. It is also home to one of the world’s richest hospital archives, with plans for a future museum. The hospital itself has moved to a new, modern building.

Exploring Barcelona’s History and Art

As your Barcelona tour guide, I invite you to discover a city where centuries of history and artistic brilliance come alive. Barcelona is unique for its coexistence of different styles: Roman remains, the extraordinary medieval Gothic Quarter, and the magnificent Modernismo architecture of Antoni Gaudí, with the Sagrada Família among its highlights. The city is also home to world-class museums that delight even the most demanding travelers. Artists such as Joan Miró, Pablo Picasso, and Antoni Tàpies left their mark here. And of course, Barcelona is Mediterranean at heart — filled with sun, color, and a lively, welcoming atmosphere.

Walking Tour Through the Gothic Quarter

Our excursion begins in the oldest part of the city, the Gothic Quarter, where Barcelona’s story began. We’ll explore the cradle of the Roman colony of Barcino, the Gothic Cathedral of the Holy Cross, the King’s Square, Sant Jaume Square, and the Jewish quarter of Call with its synagogue, the oldest in Spain. And of course, we won’t miss Les Rambles — with its living statues, the Liceu theatre, flower stalls, bird market, and the Boqueria market, the largest in the city, brimming with fruits, spices, seafood, and more.

Visiting the Picasso Museum in Barcelona

We’ll finish our walking tour at the Picasso Museum, located on Montcada Street in a series of five splendid townhouses once belonging to Catalan aristocracy. This museum is unique because its collection shows the artistic evolution of Pablo Picasso, who lived in Barcelona for nine years and gifted thousands of works to the city he loved. The museum sits in the Ribera neighborhood, once home to sailors and merchants who financed the construction of Santa Maria del Mar, one of Barcelona’s most magnificent Gothic churches.

Enjoy the Experience With a Tour Guide in Barcelona

If you’d like to include the Cathedral and the Picasso Museum, tickets can be purchased on site — and with me as your tour guide in Barcelona, you’ll skip the lines and enjoy more time inside. I look forward to welcoming you and sharing this unforgettable journey through art and history.

The post Picasso museum in Barcelona first appeared on Barcelona Tour Guide.

Explore the Modernist Eixample District

We will visit the Gothic Quarter and the Cathedral dedicated to Saint Eulalia, patron saint of the city. We will follow the district designed between the end of the 19th century and the start of the 20th century and which would be called “L’Èxaìmple”, “the Enlargement”. The affluent Barcelona`s families moved to the new Eixemple district, attracted by the modern conveniences. The upper-class was eager to custom design new homes, signing up famous architects. Passeig de Gràcia is the most elegant and prestigious avenue of Barcelona.

Admire Gaudí’s Masterpieces

Your tour guide in Barcelona will lead you to the Block of Discord or The Battle of the Buildings. That block represents the three magnificent modernist houses constructed one beside the other by three different famous architects. It’s very difficult to decide which one is more original. It’s a matter of taste.

One of those buildings was designed by Antonio Gaudí: the Casa Batlló (or “House of Bones”). The Casa Milà, the other masterpiece of Antonio Gaudí and one of Barcelona’s most popular landmarks is also located on the Passeig de Gràcia. Don’t be surprised if most locals call the building as La Pedrera. This nickname means the stone quarry and this is an ironic allusion to the resemblance of its facade to a open quarry. La Pedrera today is declared a World Heritage Site by Unesco, as well all nine buildings by Antonio Gaudí in Barcelona .

Visit the Iconic Sagrada Família

No tour is complete without a visit to the Sagrada Familia, the iconic symbol of Barcelona, the most visited attraction in Spain and one of the most famous churches in the world. Antoni Gaudí worked on the construction of the Sagrada Familia for fifty-three years. He devoted himself to it. If you wish to visit the Sagrada Familia, tickets must be reserved and paid in advance. Your accredited guide gets free entry and will help you skip the queues.

Do you like art, history, and architecture? As your Barcelona tour guide, I will take you through the world of Antoni Gaudí, the Catalan genius whose work shaped the city’s golden age of Modernism in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This was a time of rapid scientific and artistic revival, when architects and craftsmen transformed Barcelona into a showcase of Art Nouveau.

Gaudí stood out even among these visionaries. He created his own unique style, inspired by nature, where curves, colors, and organic forms blossomed into architectural wonders.

Visit the Iconic Sagrada Família

We will visit the Sagrada Familia , the very symbol of Barcelona . On November 7, 2010, the church under construction exceeded the state of planning: on that day, the Temple of Atonement, consecrated by the Pope himself, finally became a basilica. Gaudi’s magnificent project is nearing completion, but it is already considered one of the wonders of the world .

Explore Park Güell with a Tour Guide in Barcelona

Next, I will guide you through Park Güell, a jewel of harmony designed by Gaudí, where the architectural forms blend so harmoniously with nature.

Passeig de Gràcia and the Block of Discord

We will walk along the elegant Passeig de Gràcia to admire Gaudí’s most astonishing residential works. Here you’ll see the famous “Block of Discord,” including Casa Batlló—also known as the House of Bones—and La Pedrera, or “The Quarry,” one of Barcelona’s most photographed landmarks.

Practical Information

The tickets to Sagrada Familia and Park Güell must be reserved and paid in advance. Free entrance for the accredited guide. With me as your certified Barcelona tour guide, you will skip the lines at the entrance to the museums!
