Welcome to the sun-drenched Mediterranean — the birthplace of modern European winemaking. Catalonia stands out with its centuries-old wine traditions and impressive diversity, offering everything from crisp dry wines to luxurious dessert varieties. The quality? Simply exceptional.
Today, eleven wine-producing regions in Catalonia hold the prestigious DO (Denomination of Origin) status — a true mark of excellence.

Alt Penedès: of Catalan Winemaking

Just 70 km south of Barcelona lies Alt Penedès, the region’s winemaking epicenter.
A sparkling highlight is Cava, Catalonia’s pride — produced using the same traditional method as French Champagne. In fact, the very first bottle of local “champagne” was crafted here in 1872 by the legendary Codorníu winery.

Here, among hectares of vineyards, are world-renowned companies such as Codorníu and Torres, as well as numerous medium-sized family-owned wineries. They pass their craft down through generations. They carefully preserve traditions while also embracing all the modern production technologies. The winemakers themselves will guide you through the production process and offer private tastings.

Many of the region’s iconic bodegas were built in the early 20th century by top Catalan architects in the beautiful Modernist style. The architecture is so impressive, they’re often called “Wine Cathedrals.” One such gem is the Codorníu winery, designed by the celebrated architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch.

If you’re more of a wine enthusiast, we can visit the world-famous Catalan winery Torres. While their vineyards now stretch as far as California and Chile, the soul of this historic family-owned estate still resides in the shills of Penedès. Founded generations ago, Torres has grown into a true icon of modern winemaking and innovation with deep respect for tradition and ecology. A visit here is not just a tasting, but a journey through the legacy of one of the most celebrated names in the wine world.
Here, you can enjoy a guided tasting of their finest wines, followed by a leisurely lunch at their on-site restaurant, where local flavors are perfectly paired with their vintages.

Customizable Tour Experience

Join me on an excursion to the most picturesque places of the Costa Brava coast, which received its name “Wild Coast” at the beginning of the 20th century. A French journalist was enchanted by the mighty, majestic beauty of this coastline – rocky, jagged, with endless pine groves, cozy bays and beaches. As your private tour guide, I will show you not only the landscapes but also the rich history, medieval architecture and gastronomic traditions that the Catalans are proud of.

Tossa de Mar and Medieval Charm

I will take you to the seaside town of Tossa de Mar, one of the most picturesque on the coast. No wonder Marc Chagall once called it paradise. On a steep cliff rise the fortress walls of the medieval city, inside which people still live in their old houses. As your private tour guide, I will share the stories behind this unique town. The view from the heights of the old city onto the endless sea expanses fascinates even the most seasoned travelers.

Exploring the Coast with a Private Guide

Sant Feliu, S’Agaro and Pals

We will continue to Sant Feliu and S’Agaro, and of course, to the medieval town of Pals, as if from a postcard.

Empuries, Escala and Roses

Further north, closer to the Pyrenees, we will visit the ancient Greco-Roman colony-museum of Empuries, the seaside town of Escala with its famous anchovies, and the fishing village-resort of Roses, beautifully located in a wide bay.

Empuria Brava and Cap de Creus

We will explore Empuria Brava – the “Catalan Venice” full of canals where yachts sail into the open sea. Then on to Cap de Creus, the easternmost cape of Spain, and the town of Cadaqués, places that were deeply meaningful in the life and work of Salvador Dali.

Flexible Costa Brava Excursion

The streets of Barcelona are an open-air museum of architecture and plastic arts. On this guided Barcelona tour, you will discover its diversity, from Roman ruins to Gothic marvels and stunning Modernism. This tour offers a complete journey through its main streets, squares, and monuments.

A City of Diverse Architecture

One of the city’s key features is its variety of eras and styles. See the legacy of the Romans, who founded Barcino in the 1st century BC. Explore the perfectly preserved Gothic Quarter, home to the King’s Square and the majestic Cathedral. As your tour guide in Barcelona will explain, the city is also the world capital of Modernism (Art Nouveau), which reached an unprecedented peak here. You will also see ultra-modern buildings constructed for the 1992 Olympics.

To get to know such a city thoroughly and in detail, you need time. This excursion allows you to see Barcelona in its fullest form, its main streets, squares and monuments, admire the city’s architecture, and feel its inexhaustible vital energy. Barcelona is the largest port in the Western Mediterranean, an important center for international congresses and symposiums. The multifaceted flow of city guests and tourists contributes to this special atmosphere of cosmopolitanism and dynamism, so characteristic of Barcelona. All the latest trends in art, fashion, and gastronomy find their place here. And at the same time, this is a city that reverently preserves its centuries-old traditions and history.

Tour Itinerary & Modernist Masterpieces

We will visit old Barcelona, then the Eixample district, where the main masterpieces of modernist architecture are located, among which the buildings of Antonio Gaudi occupy a special place: Casa Batlló and Pedrera. We will also visit Park Güell and the Sagrada Familia – the symbol of Barcelona for millions of people around the world.

We will see Plaza de España, the architectural complex and the “Olympic Ring” on Montjuic, the Columbus monument, the Olympic Port. According to your interests, we can visit various museums in Barcelona: Pablo Picasso, Juan Miro, National Art of Catalonia, the open-air ethnographic museum “Spanish Village”, Barça club at the Nou Camp stadium, the Aquarium, etc.

Lunch Like a Local while in Barcelona

You can pre-order lunch in one of the city’s restaurants, or, as the locals do, try delicious tapas (an assortment of different small dishes) in the many bars. Catalonia knows how to cook deliciously, using traditional Mediterranean recipes and the most modern culinary trends. Catalonia is famous for its excellent wines and champagne, called “cava” here.

Book Your Expert Guided Tour

The Winery Region Priorat (Priorat) is located 100 km south of Barcelona in the territory of 11 municipalities of the Catalan region of Tarragon. It’s not too simple to get here even now, despite the presence of roads. So why will we go there? There are several reasons, I even find it difficult to determine which one is the most important.

Magnificent Landscapes & History of Priorat

Priorat is the magnificence of natural landscapes of mountainous terrain, from which it is breathtaking. Vineyards were planted on the slopes of the quartz shale mountains and hills, the vines of which, it would seem, by some miracle they grow on the grounds of volcanic origin, leatherlye. Vineyards alternate with olive and oak groves, pine forests, almond trees, picturesque villages and small old towns. Priorat is an earth with history, traditions. For connoisseurs of spiritual food, there are a lot of interesting things here.

The Renaissance of Priorat Winemaking

Currently, winemaking is a symbol of this earth, and some 20-30 years ago the name of Priorat, a small winery region in Catalonia, spoke a little even very sophisticated wines lovers. On the year, the red wines of Priorat are considered one of the best in the world!
But this is another story, about how the enthusiasm and professionalism of several people gave this land a new life, and the world of extraordinary wines.

The Visionaries: French Influence

The Frenchman René Barbier, who worked in Rioha with Alvaro Palacios, loved to come to a picturesque and very distant priority, looking at the half -forgotten mountainous vineyards. He understood that this was a unique combination of thin quartz shakes of Lorocells, a high -mountain valley climate with very hot summer and cold winter, the presence of centenary (!) Vines of Garnachi varieties (Garnacha) and Cariñena can give interesting results. This soil perfectly retains heat and reflects sunlight, it gives wines special mineral notes. In 1979, for a very small amount of money, he acquired an abandoned land, now the world famous, Clos Mogador. This was not at all surprising, because the wines that were then made here were sold in rosel, and mainly local residents consumed them. It was possible to get by the only rural road, to the town of Kraniops, where, as they say, there was only one tractor and one phone.

Renea Barbier, and soon an Alvaro Palasios, who joined his initiative, relied on the production of wines, which will save and transfer the unique Terruoir of Priorat, i.e. Special soil-climatic conditions of the Earth on which grapes grow. Curious observation: the poorer than the soil, the higher the chance to get wine with exclusive characteristics. Varieties of grapes of Garney and Karinen are as suitable for these purposes as possible, because they behave completely in different conditions, they do not have a pronounced their own individuality, but perfectly convey the special characteristics of the place of growth, in this case, the sophisticated gamut of the mineral notes inherent in breeds of volcanic origin. There were no such wines in Spain, unlike the famous Terrouarian wines of France and Italy.

Rise to World Fame

In the late 80s, a world-class manufacturers as Alvaro Palacios, Carles Pastrana, Dafné Glorian are justified in the Priorat. They bring French grape varieties here, work on assemblies, use various modern methods of winemaking. And already in 1992, in a special issue dedicated to the World Exhibition in Seville, the Clos Magador wine Rene Barbier was recognized as the best in Spain!

ALVARO PALEOS Founds its vineyards, and in 1993 the first wine L`ermita will immediately become a cult, having received 100 points from Robert Parker! Dizzyly quickly, the wines of Priorat managed to take his place among the most exquisite and expensive wines of the world!

The Wines & Their Artistry

Exquisite wine is drunk for pleasure, and in this it is consonant with art, especially music. It is no accident that many creative people, celebrities acquire their own vineyards and begin a difficult but exciting creative process of production of their own wines. Famous modern Catalan singers and composers Manuel Serrat and Luis Liak chose a priority for the production of their wines, I must say, magnificent.

The exceptional nature of local wines was confirmed by the appropriation of the Priorat in 2001 of the highest “wine” status of DOQ – Denominazione d’Oorigen Qualificada (only Rioch had a similar status).
During our tour, we will visit one of the wine cellars in the Priorat, having previously agreed on the meeting, we will visit the Akal monastery, we will have lunch in one of the local restaurants, a well -known choice of local cuisine and, of course, an extensive choice of a priorate wines.

Historic Monasteries & Villages

By the way, the name Priorat comes from the Latin Prior, which means the abbot of the monastery. Cartoixa d’Caladei monastery (Cat. Rock) – the ladder of God, was the first monastery of the Cartesians in the territory of the Iberian Peninsula, founded in the 12th century. After the expulsion of the Moors from the southern Catalan lands. Monks of hermits from the monastery of Shatrez in French Provence are justified on these lands at the invitation of King Aragon Alfons II. As you know, Cartesian monks vow silence and completely devote themselves to serving God. The great joy for them is the contemplation of the beauty of the surrounding nature, so the Cartesian monasteries built their monastery in unusually beautiful places in natural terms, distant and pacified. We can visit the Monastery of the Rock, partially restored in 2007 – one of the most important historical objects in Catalonia, located surrounded by the majestic Montsan Mountain Montsant.
They say that winemaking in Priorat was born in this monastery. In the Middle Ages, the production of the best wines was closely connected with monastic orders.

It would also be very interesting to visit the ancient village of Siurana, located at an altitude of 530m, on a huge rock, from where delightful views of vineyards, mountain cliffs of the Prades (Montsant) arrays open.

On the rock, the ruins of the Moorish fortress, which were the last outpost of Muslims near the southern borders of Catalonia in the Middle Ages, have been preserved. In 1154, the fortress was captured by Count of Barcelona Ramon Berander IV. The preserved imprint of the horse horseshoe on the edge of the cliff recalls the legend according to which the Mauritan Princess Abladesia, I do not want to be captured, saddled her horse, closed his eyes and threw herself from a cliff into the abyss. In the 12th century A romance -style church was built in the village, perfectly preserved to our time. The official number of local residents of 21 people, and at the same time in Siuran there are 4* hotel. Siuran is attracted by calmness and peace, lack of mass tourism, magnificent landscapes that open up. Siuran also gave the name of the certified area for the production of olive oil.

Tour Duration & Customization

The duration of such a program, with a trip from Barcelona will be about 14 hours. But an ideal option would be to spend two days in Priorat, spending the night in one of the hotels in small towns. Of course, the duration and content of the program will depend on your wishes and I can adjust it.

Discover Catalonia’s Wine Traditions with a Private Guide

The fertile, sunny Mediterranean is the cradle of modern European wines. Catalonia is famous for its winemaking traditions and diverse wines, from dry to dense varieties. A special place is reserved for Cava – sparkling wines produced with the same method as French champagne. These wines hold a high position in the world of celebration and luxury. The first bottle was released here back in 1872 by Codorniu. Today, Catalonia boasts eleven wine regions with DOC status, confirming the quality of its wines.

Winery Tours in Alt-Penedès

The winery region of Alt-Penedès, located 70 km south of Barcelona, is the heart of Catalonia’s winemaking. I will guide you through world-famous wineries such as Codorniu, Torres, and Freixenet, or take you to small family-owned estates where we can explore the production process and enjoy tastings. Many bodegas were built in the early 20th century by Catalan architects in the Art Nouveau style, often called “temples of wine.” One of the most beautiful is the Codorniu building, designed by Josep Puig i Cadafalch.

Gastronomy with a Private Tour Guide

Gastronomy is one of Catalonia’s greatest attractions. Good food is both pleasure and art here. I will show you restaurants ranging from Michelin-starred establishments to authentic local tapas bars where you can taste traditional Mediterranean delicacies: lobster, shrimp, oysters, sea cucumbers, crabs, pork, lamb, veal baked in clay ovens, ham, sausages, and more.

Sweet Creations and Confectionery

Confectionery here is not just delicious—it is true artistry. You will see chocolate creations that look like fine jewelry and festive cakes that amaze both the eyes and taste buds. As your private tour guide, I will take you inside these unique shops so you can experience the sweet side of Catalonia.

Flexible Program

This tour is always adapted to your wishes, whether you want to focus more on wine, food, or both.

We will go to the northern region of Catalonia – Girona, bordering France and being one of the most beautiful regions of Spain, it is about 1.5 hours drive from Barcelona. Girona is a charming, perfectly preserved ancient city, founded at the crossroads of European trade routes back in Roman times. The Girona Cathedral of the Holy Virgin Mary is unique in its innovative architectural solution of the Gothic era: inside there is only one nave, the widest of all existing ones. Inside – like a treasure box – priceless examples of the skill of architects, sculptors, jewelers, and even the chair of the Frankish emperor Charlemagne.

Figueres and Salvador Dalí

Continuing the excursion, we will go to the city of Figueres (40 min.), located very close to the border with France, in one of the most picturesque areas of northern Catalonia, called Alt Empordà. Figueres is the hometown of Salvador Dali, and it is there that his unique Theater-Museum is located. The genius Dali foresaw everything and decided himself what his museum should be like! Of course, it is unlike any other! The building itself, the exposition is a huge surrealistic performance, and everyone who gets there becomes both its participants and spectators. Paintings, compositions, sculptures, tapestries, drawings will allow you to admire again and again the brilliant artistic gift, the greatest originality and versatility of Dali’s personality. A unique collection of jewelry is exhibited in a separate room!

The Dalí Theatre-Museum

The Salvador Dalí Theatre Museum in Figueres is one of the most visited museums in Spain. The advantage of visiting the museum WITHOUT LINE (if you are accompanied by an official guide) is difficult to overestimate! A licensed guide enters for free upon presentation of his/her ID.

Dalí’s wife and muse was of Russian origin – her real name was Elena. This castle is Dalí’s gift to his muse.

The Dali Triangle is three museums that are part of the Salvador Dali Foundation and are located in his homeland, Catalonia. These museums are located in the northern part of the Girona-Empordà region, famous for its magnificent landscapes, where mountains and sea meet, where steep cliffs rise above small bays and beaches. And of course, this special local light is a constant source of inspiration for Dali, his fantasies and dreams. The northern coast of Catalonia is one of the most beautiful on our planet! The mountain road leading to the seaside town of Cadaqués is a kaleidoscope of uniquely beautiful landscapes.

First, we will visit the Salvador Dali Theatre-Museum in Figueres, where his paintings, watercolors, graphics, and surrealist compositions are located. This museum is unique in that it was created during the artist’s lifetime, and the location of each painting, each installation is the will and creativity of Dali himself. There is no traditional exhibition by theme, this is a huge surrealist performance, where everyone becomes both actors and spectators. This is exactly what Salvador Dali wanted. Salvador Dali is not only a great artist who brilliantly mastered the technique of drawing and the art of composition. He is also a designer and creator of advertising campaigns and scenery for various productions in Hollywood. A unique collection of jewelry is housed in a separate room of the museum. His incredible ideas in the field of

Collection of jewelry

Salvador Dali began creating unique, surreal jewelry in 1941 in New York. The first 22 pieces were purchased by the American millionaire Cummins Catherwood. Later, the collection was purchased by the prestigious American Owen Cheatham Foundation, which would commission new pieces from the artist. Salvador Dali created detailed, elaborate sketches of future jewelry, including selecting the precious materials from which they would be made. Dali considered the multifaceted work of Leonardo da Vinci to be the standard of artistic genius. By creating a collection of “unwearable” jewelry, Dali sought to show that jewelry can be a work of art, beautiful in form and carrying a certain idea, often metaphorical. These masterpieces were brought to life by one of the best New York jewelers of Argentine origin, Carlos Alemany.

Gala Dalí Castle in Púbol

Then we will visit the Gala Dali Castle in the village of Púbol. This medieval castle is a gift from Salvador Dali to his wife and Russian muse, who was called Gala, but whose real name was Elena. Everything in the castle was arranged according to her tastes. Of course, there are many works by Salvador Dali there. Many famous people were her guests in the castle, located in a secluded picturesque Catalan village. You will see a large number of photographs, as well as a collection of unique outfits that were created especially for her by the best fashion designers in the world: Pierre Cardin, Christian Dior, and the fabrics for them were painted by Salvador Dali. The castle has a charming Italian-style garden, where some of Salvador Dali’s sculptures are located.

Salvador Dali House Museum in Port Lligat

And then we will go to the very north of the Costa Brava coast. A beautiful road through the mountains will take us to the seaside snow-white town of Cadaqués, and then to the secluded bay of Port Lligat, where Salvador Dali’s house is located, which he built on the site of a former fisherman’s hut, in a surrealist style, returning from the USA to Europe as a world-famous artist, and a very rich man during his lifetime. It was here that their life together with Gala began, when Dali bought a small fisherman’s hut, which became both a home and a studio. This is an amazingly beautiful place, very close to the cape Cap de Creus, where, according to Dali, “the Pyrenees rush into the sea.”

Important Visitor Information

Entrance tickets to museums must be booked in advance. Entrance to Dali’s house in Port Lligat is by prior reservation only, very small entry quotas! A licensed guide passes upon presentation of his certificate.

Excursion Duration

The total duration of the excursion is about 10 hours.

The post Dalí’s Triangle in Catalonia first appeared on Barcelona Tour Guide.

The history of ornamental orange trees in Spain, introduced by Arabs. Covers the challenges of bitter fruit, its use in marmalade and liquors, and an innovative project in Seville generating electricity from the orange juice.

The post Spain and the love of oranges first appeared on Barcelona Tour Guide.

Every time I walk the streets of Barcelona and see orange trees with fruits, I never cease to admire and be amazed that they grow so simply, in the city, blazing with orange balls of fruits, attracting the gaze of even locals who have long been accustomed to them. And what can we say about tourists! Against the blue background of the cloudless Spanish sky, these beautiful trees look like part of a bright, exotic picture created by nature itself.

The tradition of decorating streets and squares with citrus trees was brought to Spain by the Arabs at the beginning of the 8th century. Orange trees, which originated in Asia, adapted well to the southern Spanish climate. The Arabs did not stay long in the territory of today’s Catalonia and Barcelona, about 50 years. For one person’s life, this is a long time, but for history, it is a moment. But in the south of Spain, they were there for 8 centuries!

In spring, the air is filled with the sweet scent of azahar, the orange blossom, but… as always, there is a flip side to everything. Tons of bitter fruit, and this is the bitter, ornamental variety, that fall from the trees are a headache for the city’s cleaning department. The oranges look beautiful on the tree, but once they fall and are crushed, the streets become sticky with juice. Apparently, this is why the practical Catalans left a reasonable number of these trees in Barcelona, not turning it into an orange grove, like, say, in Seville, in southern Spain. And there they simply do not know how to get rid of tons of bitter oranges, which the Spaniards do not eat.

Marmalade

They are used to make marmalade, much of which is exported to Britain. Seville oranges are also a key ingredient in the famous liqueurs Cointreau and Grand Marnier.

Incidentally, the origins of marmalade are surrounded by myths and legends. The first handwritten recipe for marmalade was found in Dunrobin Castle in Sutherland in the Scottish Highlands in 1683. Legend has it that a ship carrying oranges from Spain took refuge from a storm in Dundee harbour, and local confectioner James Keiller was the first to find a use for the fruit. It may be a myth, but Keiller did produce the first commercial brand of marmalade in 1797.

Production of … electricity

And now, the juice from unwanted oranges has found a new use, using it as biomass: it will be used to produce… electricity. In Seville, Spain, an experimental scheme has begun to use methane produced as a fruit enzyme to generate clean electricity for the city’s waterworks.

An unexpected decision. And very beneficial for everyone.

The post Spain and the love of oranges first appeared on Barcelona Tour Guide.

Between the end of the 19th century and the start of the 20th century, Modernism style ( Liberty style or Art Nouveau style) transformed the city of Barcelona. This period of industrial revolution and economic recovery in Catalonia saw wealthy families eager to commission custom-designed new homes from famous architects.. With no shortage of money, talent, or skilled craftsmen, the result is a unique cityscape. As your expert Barcelona tour guide, I will show you something you can see only here: all the facades are different; you can’t find any two houses that are alike.

Must-See Modernist Masterpieces in Barcelona

The list of modernist jewels is long, but a few highlights include Saint Paul’s Hospital, the Palau de la Música Catalana, and Casa Lleó i Morera (three wonderful works by architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner).
Saint Paul’s Hospital: A Barcelona Tour Highlight

This masterpiece of Catalan Art Nouveau, built between 1902 and 1930, is a city within a city. It was created by the eminent Catalan architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner, a father of the Modernist style who headed the Barcelona School of Architecture for 20 years.

History of the construction

At the end of the 19th century, Barcelona needed a modern hospital. After several study trips to Europe, Domènech i Montaner designed a project that exceeded the best hospitals of the time. He envisioned a complex of 48 specialized pavilions, including a surgical department, all connected by an underground network for moving equipment, personnel, and patients. The surgical pavilion was in use until the 1960s and was the site of Spain’s first heart transplant.

Healing Through Beauty

The core idea was to heal not only through medicine but also through beauty, light, and color. The complex featured a central avenue planted with trees and 145 square meters of gardens per patient. All buildings are made of red brick and decorated with colorful mosaics and ceramics, which were both beautiful and met strict hygiene standards. The administration building’s facade resembles a monumental altarpiece, adorned with sculptures by the best Catalan masters of the time.

A Story of Charity

The hospital was made possible by benefactors. The Catalan banker and philanthropist Pau Gil bequeathed half his fortune for its construction. The mosaics in the administration pavilion represent the coats of arms of Barcelona and Paris, as well as Gil’s bank emblem, alongside the inscription: “Happiness in honesty.” Later, donations from wealthy local families allowed construction to be completed. Upon its 1930 inauguration, King Alfonso XIII of Spain declared, “You Catalans are like that… you build palace-hospitals for the poor.”

Saint Paul’s Today: A UNESCO World Heritage Site

In 1997, the hospital complex was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The restored pavilions now house research labs, host conferences, and welcome visitors. It is also home to one of the world’s richest hospital archives, with plans for a future museum. The hospital itself has moved to a new, modern building.
